VAT on Sugar, amended rate of tax on cell phones applicable w.e.f 25-07-2012 in Punjab

Few days back there was a news that VAT on sugar has been imposed by Punjab Government @ 5%, but no notification publicly was available confirming the same. Now Excise & Taxation Department, Punjab has issued a public notice confirming that VAT @ 5% has been imposed on sugar w.e.f 25-07-2012.

It has also been clarified that surcharge will not be applicable on sugar hence rate of tax on sugar will be 5% only and not 5.5%.


Rate of tax on Cell phones including all its parts and accessories such as head phone, Data Cable, Mobile Charger, memory card, ear phone, Audio device, Mobile cover, Mobile battery, Bluetooth and Mobile holder has also been amended to 8.8% after adding the surcharge.

Similarly Punjab Govt. has amended The Punjab Tax on Entry of Goods into Local Areas Act, 2000 vide which w.e.f 25-07-2012, "Luibricants including Transformer oil and all types of processing oils and fluids", shall be liable to Entry Tax @ 12.5%.

All the above amendments are effective from 25-07-2012.

It has been directed to all the dealers dealing exclusively in sugar and not having registration certificates under PVAT Act, 2005/Central Sales Tax Act, 1956 to take registration certificates(RC) from the concerned district authorities.
